The current secretary of the Macedonian government, Muhamed Zeqiri, has been sent to Skopje prison after the Basic Court remanded him in custody for 30 days.
The reason that leads behind bars the senior official in our neighboring country are the suspicions of abuse of office and official authority, related to abuses on a contract for consulting services.
The pre-trial judge imposed the detention measure because, according to him, “there is a risk of escape, disappearance of traces or the influence of witnesses, as well as the risk that this person will repeat the violation.”
The Prosecution suspects that without a public procurement procedure, the Secretary of Government in the period from April 2021 to January 2022, has entered into a contract with a company for consulting services totaling about 941,985 euros, which in fact is about 147,000 more. more than the predicted value.
The offense is suspected to have been committed together with two Croatian citizens, who were also given the same measure, but because they are not in Northern Macedonia, the detention will take effect after their detention.
Following the announcement of the Prosecution to open the investigation, Zeqiri resigned irrevocably from the post of Secretary General.
In the published announcement, he said he is confident he will prove his innocence.
The resignation was accepted by the Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, who said he respects the decision as an act of political responsibility and added that he expects a fully transparent and independent investigation by the Prosecution and the judiciary.
