The European Union on Thursday approved the fifth round of sanctions against Russia over its occupation of Ukraine.
The new measures include banning Russian coal imports as well as an embargo on arms exports to Russia.
The sanctions also include closing EU ports to Russian ships and banning exports of high-tech products to Moscow.
“This package extends sanctions against Russia to new areas and envisages, in particular, sanctions against oligarchs, Russian propaganda actors, members of the military, entities in the industrial and technological sector linked to Russian aggression against Ukraine,” said the French presidency of the Council. EU as it warned that more details will be made public in the future.
Meanwhile in the US, as an additional measure, the US Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to remove the status of “most favored country” Russia and its close ally Belarus, as well as to ban Russian oil imports, causing thus further economic consequences for Moscow.
The Senate voted with 100 votes in favor and none against in favor of the measure removing the status of Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR).
The final step is taken by President Joe Biden, who is expected to sign the bills.
A few days ago, new US sanctions included the family of Russian President Vladimir Putin, separating his two grown daughters in addition to major Russian banks.
