On April 7, a vote is taken on Russia’s withdrawal from the Human Rights Council
The United Nations General Assembly will vote on April 7 to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council.
The vote follows reports that Russian troops have committed serious crimes in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.
The vote was confirmed for 10 a.m. Thursday, said Paulina Kubiak, a spokeswoman for General Assembly President Abdullah Shahid.
Two-thirds of the countries that voted in the 193-member assembly must support the suspension of Russia’s temporary removal from the Geneva-based Human Rights Council.
In recent years, the organization has come under pressure from the authorities in the wake of the ongoing crackdown on non-governmental organizations, independent media and democratic institutions throughout Russia.
Many activists, journalists and other people have fled Russia to other countries since Russia launched a large-scale offensive against Ukraine on February 24.
