Russia today reported the first case of a man infected with the H5N8 bird flu virus, believed to have contracted it from them.
Officials said seven employees of a poultry farm in southern Russia were infected in December, following a spread of the virus there.
“The seven infected të are already feeling well,” said Anna Popova, head of Russia’s Consumer Protection Agency.
She added that appropriate measures have been taken to stop the spread of infections.
Popova said there were no signs of human-to-human transmission of the virus, and that developments had been reported to the World Health Organization.
She further dismissed the “significant scientific discovery of the Russian laboratory Vektor”, which had isolated the genetic material of the virus variant from infected workers.
“Detection of these mutations before the virus develops the ability to transmit from person to person gives us and the rest of the world time to prepare for the mutations and to respond in a timely manner,” Popova said.
She added that Russian scientists are already working on creating human testing systems for the new virus.
Several variants of bird flu have previously infected humans causing death, but this is the first time this has happened with H5N8.
