The foreign ministers of NATO member states are meeting in Brussels today for a two-day meeting, where they will discuss the best way to support Ukraine in the next phase of the conflict.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that the Alliance expects Moscow to try to take control of “the entire” Donbas region in the east, with the sole aim of creating a corridor from Russia to annexed Crimea.
He added that the Allies have time to help the Ukrainian army prepare for this offensive. Stoltenberg said Russia was planning a “very focused” offensive. “We are now seeing a large movement of Russian forces leaving Kiev to regroup, rearm and supply and change their focus to the east“, He said.
Stoltenberg’s comments appear to confirm Moscow’s announcement in late March that it would focus on the “complete liberation of the Donbas”, as the area, which includes the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, has been partially occupied by pro-separatists. “Since 2014, Stoltenberg also said that this would be a new and important phase of the Russian occupation, which began on February 24.”“The repositioning of Russian troops will probably take time, maybe a few weeks,” he said. “According to him, this time is extremely important for NATO allies to provide support.”For Ukraine.
NATO foreign ministers on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to discuss how to send more anti-tank weapons, ammunition and medical supplies to Ukraine. The meeting is also attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
