The US reiterated its call for Russia to be suspended by the UN Human Rights Council, saying Washington had called the attacks on Ukraine war crimes.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, told the Security Council “Russia should not have a position of authority in a body whose purpose is to promote respect for human rights.”
She said Russia’s participation “damages” the credibility of the human rights council, after “unprovoked war and humanitarian crisis”.
After Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech, Thomas-Greenfield said: “We stand with the people of Ukraine as you face this brutal attack on your sovereignty, democracy and freedom.”
