Lithuania has become the first country in the European Union to reject Russian gas imports.
The Prime Minister of the country Ingrida Simonytė, also the news through a post on ‘Twitter’ where he said that from now on, Lithuania will no longer consume any cubic cm of Russian ‘toxic’ gas.
Meanwhile, the European Union has pledged to reduce Russian gas consumption by 66% by the end of this year.
The European Union depends on Russia for about 40% of its natural gas. Russia also supplies about 27% of its oil imports and 46% of its coal imports. Taken together, this trade is worth tens of billions of dollars a year for Russia.
It has promised to diversify its energy supplies before, especially in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Little progress has been made, in part because Germany – Russia’s largest energy consumer in Europe – did not want to rock the boat with Moscow.
