Explosions have been reported in the southern city of Odessa. The city has been hit by rockets and there are reports of fires in some areas, the city council said in an online post.
Meanwhile, Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the Odessa regional military administration, has called on residents to stay in shelters.
Speaking to the Ukrainian public broadcaster, he said one of the “critical infrastructure buildings” had been hit.
Among other things, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia wants to take control of the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine.
In a video address, he said, “What is the purpose of Russian troops?” They want to take Donbas too [në lindje] and southern Ukraine.
“What is our goal?” “To protect ourselves, our freedom, our land and our people,” Zelensky said.
He praised Ukrainian forces for defending the besieged city of Mariupol, which has been almost completely destroyed by Russian bombing.
The Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities has allowed Kiev to “gain valuable time” and weaken Russia’s military capabilities, Zelensky said.
Earlier this week, Russia announced it would “drastically” reduce combat operations around the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and the northern city of Chernihiv, and focus on eastern Ukraine.
