Dritan Bardhi has been dealing with livestock for 30 years. In the camp in the village of Menik near Tirana, the 44-year-old breeds 180 goats and kids.
He says that dealing with cattle requires effort, farm work starts at 6 am and ends when the sun goes down. But as if that were not enough, the increase in food costs this year has prevented him from increasing the number of small items in his stables.
Demands for local goat meat and milk are high, but traders are demanding that a liter of milk be bought livestock cheaper than a liter of water at the supermarket.
“Corn has gone approximately 60 thousand quintals, 35 thousand lekë. “This year he has been able to spend,” he said.
Why how much did they cost a year ago?
Corn costs 30 thousand lekë while hermet 25.
Meanwhile just selling the liter of milk?
I sell a liter of milk for 500 old lek, but I will increase it because I can not afford it. Now I will decide to sell 600 lekë per liter.
For years, Dritani planted food for his livelihood on his land, but rising prices of chemical fertilizers and seeds forced him to leave the land barren.
“1 urea quital has gone for 120 thousand ALL. Imagine planting hasal or corn at least 600 thousand lekë just to plant it, not including milling and cultivation. For this reason I will buy the food and give it to you less. “I have nothing to do, I can not do it differently.”
Dritani benefits from the Ministry of Agriculture 12 thousand old lekë for a goat. For the whole herd he receives less than 2000 euros. A very small amount of money, in the face of the great needs of the farm. And the lack of subsidies is not only felt in Dritan’s camp.
“It’s me and another who has over 200 goats. No others have removed the hold of only two and three goats. ”
INSAT figures confirm the disturbing fact that the number of living things in the country is declining. In 2020 in Albania there were almost 95 thousand goats less than a year earlier.
Insufficient subsidies force shepherds to give up their stalls, while dairies force them to turn a blind eye to the milk of Serbian farmers. Dritani does not hide his anger about this.
