Google Europe said yesterday it had blocked the main pro-Kremlin, RT and Sputnik channels on YouTube and other networks amid the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
Google, the owner of YouTube, said in a comment to Reuters that it has removed Russian state-owned information networks from online search tools.
Kent Walker, head of Google for Global Affairs, said in a comment that in the event of a crisis “extraordinary measures are being taken to stop online disinformation.”
The move comes after the European Commission approved sanctions against Russian networks with audiences in Britain, Germany and France, in English and Spanish, for European media markets.
EC President Ursula von der Leyen said earlier that Sputnik’s RT networks “are part of the Kremlin’s media machine,” so the EU will ban their “disinformation in Europe” information.
Russian media have called the latest restrictions ‘unjustified censorship’.
“The blockade is just a sharp turn in the attack on fundamental principles of democracy such as freedom of the press,” Sputnik said in a statement.
YouTube declined to specify which channels it banned throughout the vote and whether it would restore content.
