Chile has today opened a lawsuit against Bolivia in the UN Supreme Court over the river claimed by both countries, in the latest series of conflict between neighbors.
Bolivia’s claim that Chile pays for its water has been called “absurd” by Santiago, according to a lawsuit filed in The Hague tribunal.
Chile wants the court to declare equal rights for the Silala River, which flows from Bolivia “on an international water course”. Santiago says its claims to water have been denied by Bolivia since 1999.
Even in 2016 they took the neighboring country to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which was set up after World War II for debates between countries.
In the midst of protracted legal battles, Bolivia also sued Chile, asking the court to establish “sovereignty… over the flow of Silala waters produced in its territory.”
Former Bolivian President Evo Morales has previously sought to exploit the water issue in order for Bolivia to regain access to the Pacific Ocean.
La Paz lost the right after the defeat against Chile in the 19th century war.
In 2018, the court rejected Bolivia’s request to go to sea, saying that “it was not legally obliged to negotiate such a thing”.
At the time, Morales threatened to reduce the flow of Silala to the Chilean Atacama Desert and impose tariffs on its use.
Relations between the countries remain tense.
