The officer who passed away was a month away from retirement, after four decades of service.
A Pennsylvania police lieutenant was shot dead today, a month after retiring, when a man trying to break into a family home opened fire on officers who arrived at the scene.
The old Lebanese town officer, William Lebo, and three of his colleagues were immediately greeted with fire as they entered Forest Street.
The two injured officers remain in hospital, while the suspect, 34-year-old Travis Shaud, a local resident of the town, was killed during the exchange of fire.
Shaud had precedents of domestic violence as well as mental health problems, according to authorities.
“The family who notified the police tried to intervene, to provide assistance, but met with fierce resistance,” authorities said.
Shaud previously lived in the house in question but had been away for several years.
Lebanon Mayor Sherry Capello said the injured officers are Ryan Adams, 34, Derek Underkoffler, 32. While victim Lebo had planned to retire on May 1 after 40 years of service with the department.
A family member had noticed after returning from work that Shaud had broken the back of the apartment and notified police.
Officers who arrived were greeted by the immediate fire of Shaud who was killed after the return of fire by officers.
“As you can imagine it is a traumatic event,” said Lebanon Police Chief Todd Breiner. “Our boys are strong, but still human, with families.”
“The incident is still under investigation and details will be given as soon as it is closed. “At the moment we are focused on the well-being of the injured”, said the authorities without giving more details.
