Russia today praised India for not judging the conflict in Ukraine unilaterally, as the two countries’ foreign ministers met in the capital Delhi.
India has not joined the broad drive of Russian occupation of Ukraine and is a powerful buyer of Russian armaments.
But it faces a delicate diplomatic act as it comes under pressure from Western countries to help curb Russia.
After the talks India said it preferred a peaceful resolution of the conflicts.
India is a nuclear power and has long pursued an international policy outside the mainstream, without aligning itself with the interests of certain superpowers or political blocs.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke yesterday about the friendship between the two countries in his statement.
“Finally, our Western counterparts prefer to reduce any other international issues related to the conflict in Ukraine,” he said.
“We appreciate that India comments on this situation in its entirety and not unilaterally,” Lavrov added.
Russia has justified its occupation of Ukraine by seeking to demilitarize and denationalize its neighbor, an argument rejected by the West as a pretext.
Lavrov’s Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar, “stressed the importance of stopping violence and fighting in Ukraine.”
“Differences and debates must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy in accordance with international law, as after the UN convention on the sovereignty and integrity of states,” the Indian ministry said.
India, meanwhile, has stepped up its oil and gas purchases from Russia following falling prices from Western sanctions.
Yesterday, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she respected India’s decision on Russian purchases but urged other countries “to work more closely together on defense, trade, energy and food security.” // BBC //
