Evacuations of civilians from Mariupol failed this Wednesday, as Russian bombing was felt throughout the day.
Russian troops have attacked nine settlements in the port city, damaging at least eight civilian buildings, including homes and shops, according to Ukrainian police.
The Russians fired “tanks, artillery and other lighter weapons”, leaving several wounded.
Thousands of people have managed to leave Mariupol in recent days, after weeks of heavy Russian bombing.
Donetsk region governor Kyrylenko says civilian motorcades were not allowed to leave the city today. Russian troops are using rocket launchers, he added.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that its forces were “regrouping” near the Ukrainian capital Kiev and the northern city of Chernohiv, in order to complete the “liberation” of the Donbas region, as they call it.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that he recognized the separatist regions of Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, as independent states, and ordered the deployment of Russian forces in those territories.
