Twenty people were killed when professional drug cartel killers opened fire without discrimination, in a covert turkey duel betting event.
Seventeen men and three women were killed in the bloody massacre in the town of Las Tranja in the Michoacan region of northern Mexico.
The incident happened shortly after 10.30pm on Sunday when the group suspected of being members of rival drug cartels wearing military uniforms entered the gathering and opened fire.
Four other civilians were taken to hospital with bullet wounds as more than 100 cartridges were found on the ground by authorities.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador blamed criminal gangs for the killings and vowed a full and speedy investigation.
“It was a massacre of one group against another,” he told a news conference as the army and National Guard arrived at the scene to investigate.
The incident has not been clarified by the authorities, but since last month, gang violence in Mexico has increased at an alarming rate, spreading to the country’s famous tourist resorts such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Experts say the territorial war takes place mainly between the Gulf drug cartels and the Jalisco Nueva Generation.
The infamous Sinaloa cartel, formerly run by jailed boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, is also active in some areas.
