Due to rising oil prices and agricultural mechanics it costs farmers more today to work the land.
To save 2500 lek of plowing, the Zeneli brothers from Kasharaj of Lushnja have decided to go back in time by plowing the land. They are planting corn with the help of a donkey, as they sold the oxen they had because they could not feed them. Samiu pulls the working animals while Asqeriu holds the plow. From 7 o’clock in the morning until west they manage to work 3 dynym.
Samiu shows that it is impossible for them to afford the prices not only of agricultural mechanics but also of inputs, causing them to plant corn without throwing fertilizer. They are aware that the yield for corn will be low but they have no other alternative.
Sami Zeneli, farmer: This is the last year I will work because next year I will leave, emigrate and leave the lands.
Even planting is done by hand to save.
Asqeriu says that the whole village is turning to plowing as in the old days. The only person who has zetor in the village uses it for his own land.
There are about 40 hectares of land in Kasharaj, of which a considerable part is left barren.
