On the eve of further talks between Ukraine and Russia, a senior adviser to the Ukrainian president says they are not willing to sacrifice “their territorial integrity.”
As fighting continues on the ground, Ukrainian forces have reportedly regained full control of the town of Irpin, a few miles from Kiev. Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said Irpin had been “liberated” and that Russian soldiers were being called upon to surrender.
The southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, on the other hand, is on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe and must be completely evacuated, its mayor said. Vadym Boichenko said about 160,000 civilians were stranded in the city without electricity. 26 buses were waiting to evacuate civilians, but Russian forces had not agreed to provide them with a safe passage, he said.
Kiev says it sees no signs on the ground that Russia has abandoned a plan to encircle the Ukrainian capital, they said they have suspended all evacuation operations as they believe the Russians could attack them in the meantime.
Meanwhile a senior US official said Russian forces are currently stationed in some parts of Ukraine.
There was “no change” in the situation in Mariupol, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv or Kharkiv, the official said.
He said Russian forces have carried out more than 1,370 rocket launches into Ukraine since the beginning of the occupation.
