Ukraine has vowed to investigate gruesome footage released that is believed to include horrific abuses of Russian prisoners of war, some of whom are seen being shot in the leg.
“The government is taking the allegations seriously, and there will be a swift investigation,” Presidential Adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said yesterday, according to the US daily Washington Examiner .
“We are a European army, we do not abuse prisoners. “If this turns out to be true, it is absolutely unacceptable behavior,” said Volodymyr Zelensky, an adviser to the president.
One of the videos showed Ukrainian soldiers disembarking from a truck with three Russian soldiers shortly before the prisoners were shot in the leg.
In another, the bloodied faces of the prisoners are seen after their hoods are removed.
The authenticity of the gruesome footage has not yet been independently verified and the location where they were shot is unknown, but many episodes of extreme violence have spread to the network that have shocked audiences around the world.
“I want to remind our army, civilians and defense forces that the abuse of prisoners is a war crime and there is no amnesty for martial law,” Arestovych said.
Ukrainian officials have said they will launch an investigation into videos showing abused or executed prisoners of war.
But earlier Ukrainian military commander Valerii Zaluzhnyi accused Russia of staging the videos and urged the public to trust only official sources.
Some videos showed captured Russian soldiers bleeding and disguised.
Reports said the Russians in the scene were part of an army reconnaissance group in the Kharkiv region.
Yesterday Russia condemned the brutality conveyed by the footage.
“Scenes spread on the Internet show prisoners being treated with extreme cruelty by Ukrainian nationalists. “Online video shows captured Russian soldiers being shot in both legs without medical assistance,” said AI Bastrykin, head of the Russian Federation’s investigative commission.
