Premature births have doubled in the besieged city of Kharkiv and Lviv.
The BBC brings the story of 5-month-old baby Polina, who weighed less than 600 grams when she was born and is already fighting for her life.
Premature births like Polina’s have grown since the war began, according to Iryna Kondratova, director of the clinic where Polina was born.
“Infections, lack of medical help, poor nutrition: war poses a risk of premature birth“, She said.
Early births now make up 50% of all births in her clinic.
Not all Ukrainian hospitals are reporting an increase, but in the Lviv maternity hospital, which has seen a recent influx of mothers from conflict zones, premature births have doubled, from one in ten to one in five.
The hospital has started building a special underground bunker to house the babies, in case of air strikes.
