Colombian police announced today that the drummer of the legendary group ‘Foo Fighters’, Taylor Hawkins lost his life last night in a hotel room from a heart attack in the capital Bogota as they added that the death could be related to drug use.
Local reports said hotel staff had notified emergency services after Hawkins began suffering from severe chest pain but when help arrived the musician had died.
Hawkins, the father of two teenage children, had previously discussed drug addiction and four years after joining the Foo Fighters, in 2001 ended up in hospital from an overdose.
Shortly after Hawkins’s death dozens of fans and journalists began to gather near the hotel where he was staying, shocked by the news. Some of them lit candles.
Ambulances and police cars were seen outside the hotel as Hawkins’s body was pulled out by a forensic truck.
Hawkins, married to wife Alison and father of two children Oliver and Annabelle, had just completed a music tour in South America.
Hawkins joined the band in 1997 after the band’s second album, ‘The Color and the Shape’.
Before playing Foo Fighters, Hawkins played drums for Alanis Morissette as he was later recruited by leader Dave Grohl – the band’s former Nirvana drummer.
Grohl formed his second band Foo Fighters in 1994 a few months after the death of Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, who killed himself.
After Cobain’s suicide in April, Grohl initially withdrew from the music world but in October he submitted notes for an album of 15 pieces of music he had written during his isolation.
With the arrival of Hawkins in 1997, the Foo Fighters succeeded in the alternative rock scene by regularly filling halls and stadiums.
