Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has rejected a request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for tougher weapons and sanctions against Russia.
Orban rejected Zelensky’s demands to the European Council, saying they were against Hungary’s interests.
“Hungary wants to stay out of this war, so it will not allow the transfer of arms and weapons to Ukraine,” Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said in a statement.
Orban says the ethnic-Hungarian minority in western Ukraine would be threatened if Hungary sent weapons to Kiev.
Hungary, a member of the EU and NATO, has refused to send military aid to Kiev. However, it has allowed more than half a million Ukrainian refugees to enter its territory.
The BBC writes that Orban has cultivated close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years.
Zelensky urged Orban on Thursday to approve the extension of sanctions, and sever business ties with Russia.
