The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, participated in the high-level meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the “Friendship Group on Responsibility / Accountability”, referring to the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Xhaçka said that the situation in Ukraine, more than a sentence, requires responsibility.
“As uncomfortable as it may be, we are here because of Putin’s election, but also because of our decisions. Holding Russia accountable is also about not allowing history to repeat itself. There is hard evidence to disprove deliberate attacks on civilians, which are prohibited by international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes. It is our duty to help and support this process of exposing the truth and communicating this truth with the aim of ending the war. “Albania has wholeheartedly embraced this initiative and will support all efforts to gather evidence and document the atrocities of the war in Ukraine.”.
Following the denunciation of the UN General Assembly for the acts committed by Russia, as well as the continuation of the mechanisms set up by the International Community, to hold accountable the perpetrators of war crimes, Albania, Colombia, Denmark, the Marshall Islands, The Netherlands and Ukraine co-founded this interregional forum of states dedicated to securing responsibility for crimes committed in Ukraine.
The “Accountability / Accountability Friendship Group” aims to exchange information between states, international organizations, institutions and civil society, optimizing the process of accountability and justice but also the involvement of smaller states in this process.
