The United Nations will face three resolutions on Wednesday regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ukraine after Russia decided to vote on a resolution that does not mention its attack on Ukraine.
The General Assembly is scheduled to begin considering two rival resolutions on Wednesday morning – one backed by Ukraine and Western countries that make it clear Russia is responsible for the growing humanitarian crisis and the other sponsored by South Africa not to mention Russia.
The Security Council will vote on the third resolution, which is sponsored by Russia and widely criticized for not referring to the occupation of Ukraine.
Russia had canceled a vote in the council last Friday after diplomats predicted it would be largely defeated, with many abstentions and very few pro votes when at least nine are needed for approval along with no vetoes.
Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, told reporters on Tuesday that Russia had now requested a vote on Wednesday. He was scheduled to be held after the scheduled Security Council meeting Wednesday morning for his co-operation with the Arab League.
Polyansky said that if Western countries do not support the Russian resolution, it would be “a reflection of their hypocrisy” and a refusal to support a purely humanitarian measure “without any politicization”, like other humanitarian resolutions adopted by the council. members.
Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
So far, the war in Ukraine has caused millions of refugees.
From the start of the war until midnight on March 19, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 902 civilians killed and 1,459 wounded.
Ukrainian officials say thousands of civilians have been killed.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine reported on Saturday that 112 children have been killed since the beginning of the fighting while more than 140 children have been injured.
A severe humanitarian crisis is currently taking place in the port city of Mariupol where it is estimated that over 200,000 civilians remain stranded without water, electricity and food supplies.REL
