Russian President Vladimir Putin’s top spokesman has acknowledged that Russia has not yet achieved any of its military goals in Ukraine and has refused to deny that Moscow could use nuclear weapons.
In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Dmitry Peskov repeatedly refused to rule out that Russia would consider the use of nuclear weapons against what Moscow saw as an “existential threat.”
Asked under what conditions Putin would use Russia’s nuclear capability, Peskov replied: “If it is an existential threat to our country, then it could be.”
Asked what Putin thought he had achieved so far in Ukraine, Peskov replied: “Well, first of all, not yet. “He has not achieved anything yet.”
The spokesman also claimed that the “special military operation” – as the Kremlin officially calls Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – “was proceeding strictly in accordance with previously set plans and goals”.
