Serbia has refused to impose sanctions on Russia for its occupation of Ukraine. Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin said on Tuesday that Belgrade would not impose sanctions and would not join the Western “hysteria” against Moscow.
“Serbia will never be part of the anti-Russian hysteria in which the property of Russian citizens and the property of the Russian Federation are stolen, just as we will not stop the Russian media.”
Serbia is seeking membership in the European Union, but is one of the few countries in Europe that has refused to join international sanctions against the Kremlin. Russia and Serbia have close political, historical and cultural ties.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has previously stated that Serbia will not join the military alliance, saying they have enough soldiers to protect their children and future generations.
Earlier, Vucic had also stated that if his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemns the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, then he too will condemn Russia.
