A 50-year-old man has appeared in court in Germany today, accused of shooting dead a gas worker who asked him to wear a mask while buying beer.
The September murder last year in the town of Oberstein shocked Germany, where fierce anti-restraint and anti-vaccination protests took place.
The conflict had started when the young 20-year-old employee had asked the accused to wear a mask inside the store, as required by the German government at the time.
The suspect, identified as Mario N. had left and returned later with the required mask but as he paid for the beer cans he removed the mask for a moment and the debate resumed.
Prosecutors said he pulled out a revolver and shot the employee in the head.
Prosecutor Nicole Frohn said Mario N. was angry about the restrictive measures considering them as a violation of their rights.
“Since he knew he could not kill the responsible politicians, he decided to kill the employee who insisted on implementing the measures,” the prosecutor said.
Germany this month has mitigated most disease measures but masks are still required in many indoor environments.
