The risk of an energy crisis due to the war in Ukraine, has forced the Belgian government to postpone the plan to shut down two nuclear reactors, which should have been dismantled by 2025.
The reactors are located at two power plants that are currently still active, Doel and Tihange. In a statement to the media, the government said “it had decided to postpone the closure of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors for ten years, claiming that this is a necessary measure to strengthen the country’s independence from fuels, taking into account the geopolitical context ”.
Last December, while not completely giving up nuclear power, the Belgian government announced that all seven reactors at the two nuclear power plants would be shut down by the end of 2025.
However, in a recent statement, she announced that the new plans do not exclude renewable energy.
The Belgian government has planned to invest 1.1 billion euros to be poured into the transition to so-called “carbon neutrality”, thanks to wind energy, solar energy and “green” hydrogen, ie hydrogen produced from renewable sources.
At the same time, 25m euros a year will be invested over the next four years to fund research on small nuclear power plants.
