Russia’s former foreign minister has ruled out the possibility of a nuclear war, calling the prospect an “empty threat” from Vladimir Putin.
Andrei Kozyrev, who served as head of Russian diplomacy under Putin’s predecessor Boris Yeltsin, said the era of the current Russian president would end in “catastrophe” because of the Ukraine war.
Putin placed Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert three weeks ago following the so-called “unfriendly” response of the West after its occupation. This raised fears that he was considering using a nuclear weapon, yet many experts think he will not get there.
“Kozyrev, speaking on The Economic Asks podcast, said he agreed with them.”It is just blackmail, they are empty threats“, He said. Russia is believed to have 4477 nuclear warheads. It is one of nine countries with nuclear weapons capabilities. Of the other eight, three are NATO allies, the US, France and the UK, of which there are 5,943 nuclear warheads. Kozyrev says Putin did not really give that order.
“He pretended to be ordering something like that. He is playing a game. Putin knows very well that he is pressing the button, those from strategic weapons turn into suicide weapons, because he is sending a nuclear missile to Europe or the US, two will be returned, and no one survives“, Says Kozyrev.
The former minister stressed that what he calls Putin’s dictatorship is heading towards disaster, and even that now it is, he says, Putin simply does not understand.
