On Friday, the 23rd day of the invasion of Ukraine, fierce fighting took place in the city center of Mariupol, after the attack in Lviv and Kiev.
The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boichenko, told the BBC that the fighting was “really very active”. “Tank and machine gun battles continue,” he said. “Everyone is hiding in the bunkers.”
In addition to Lviv, Russia also attacked Kharkiv, where Ukraine’s state emergency service said a high-rise building had been targeted, killing at least one person.
The shells also reportedly hit the eastern city of Kramatorsk, killing two people and injuring six others. In the northern part of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, one person was killed and four others were injured after parts of a Russian rocket landed on a residential building.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said more than 130 people had been rescued so far, but officials said rescue efforts had been hampered by fears of future Russian attacks.
Seeing the aggravated situation, French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to lift the siege on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, allow humanitarian access and order an immediate ceasefire.
