When artillery shells began to fall on Ukraine, Olena Lukash thought of nothing but the safety of “her four-legged children.”
The animal lover therefore packed all her 20 French bulldogs and hurried off to the border with Poland.
After leaving the animals at a friend’s house, she returned to the dangerous road to Kiev to pick up 30 other dogs.
The latter she sent to Vinnitsa, in central Ukraine.
Brave Olena already says she will return to the war zone to rescue other vulnerable animals.
The 53-year-old dog caretaker says: “Dogs are my children and my job. I did not believe that a war could start, the first week I believed that everything would end soon. “But when the shells started falling near the house, I realized I had to save my four-legged children.”
With the rise in prices that followed, Olena says she can barely afford to pay for fuel and dog food.
She says she has to pay $ 400 a week for dog food.
Olena says: “We are now about 300km away from the fighting but I want to send my dogs to a safe place in Europe. I love them very much and I am ready to do everything to protect the lives of weak animals. So far I have only returned to Ukraine once. “But I also have to make two or three trips.”
“I need to raise money for dog food, as well as find adoptive families for them.”
Olena has set up support groups in neighboring countries in order for dogs rescued from Ukraine to find long-term shelter.
“I have to find a safe place for dogs in Europe first and then rescue other dogs from Ukraine,” she said.
There have been numerous scenes when Ukrainians fleeing the conflict have taken their pets with them, such as the case of veterinarian Konrad Kuzminski, who rescued dozens of cats, dogs, crows, rabbits and even a chameleon.
Driving a vehicle converted into an ambulance, he crosses the border every day to rescue trapped animals in Ukraine.
