A British pilot has died while his Italian co-pilot was injured after their plane crashed during a training flight, reports said today.
The M-346 test flight plane was flying over the mountains near Lake Como when it crashed Wednesday in the Lombardy region.
The two pilots are believed to have been released from the vehicle, which then collided, while conducting “tests for the Italian armed forces”, writes the British daily MailOnline.
The plane crashed at an altitude of 2500 meters before catching fire and crashing near the town of Colico.
Large plumes of smoke were seen near the top of the mountain as witnesses said they had seen a “fireball” and then heard a loud roar.
Emergency services said they had recovered the body of the British pilot the afternoon of the crash.
The Italian co-pilot of the victim remains in serious condition with “severe facial trauma” in a hospital in Milan, writes the local daily The Republic.
The plane had reportedly been flying for several hours and was returning to base when it crashed.
The manufacturers of the aircraft, the Italian group Leonardo, expressed their condolences to the slain pilot.
Authorities said the accident is under investigation.
“Unfortunately the groups that arrived at the scene of the accident confirmed the disappearance of one of the two pilots,” they said.
