Gjirokastra houses some of the most complex defense infrastructure constructions built during the communist era.
Several hundred bunkers, the Cold War tunnel, the castle prison, a series of shelters in case of imaginary attacks that were part of the propaganda of the time today represent in addition to traces of history also tourist assets.
The Cold War tunnel is perhaps the most paranoid defense building built around the 1970s to house party leaders and senior local officials in the event of a nuclear attack.

Scholars estimate that the attitude towards the construction of the defense system but also the prison, museums, Enver Hoxha’s house in Gjirokastra has changed over the years and today efforts should be made to tell the story based on facts, documents and witnesses.
90 years ago in Gjirokastra the first national prison in the country was opened, unfortunately using the stones of the famous Dunavat bridges. Today the demand of the tourism market is believed to be imposing steps towards the salvation of history and truth.
