The mayor of Melitopol, who was reportedly abducted by Russian forces five days ago, has been released, according to advisers to the Ukrainian president.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously accused Russia of entering a “new phase of terror” after Ukraine showed footage of him, according to them, as mayor Ivan Fedorov being abducted blindfolded.
Melitopol was one of the first cities to fall into the hands of Russian forces and a new mayor was appointed. The Ukrainian government also accused Russia of kidnapping the mayor of Dniprorudne.
Following the announcement of Fedorov’s release, Ukrainian officials posted a video on Zelensky’s social media calling the mayor and telling him he was “Happy to hear his voice and that he was alive.”
Fedorov is heard thanking the president for “not abandoning me” and saying that he will needa day or two to recover, and then I will be at your command to contribute to our victory.
