NATO has sent tens of thousands of troops, including the British Royal Navy, an aircraft carrier, a destroyer and a nuclear-powered attack submarine to Norway, members of the alliance that shares a 200km land border with Russia.
Troops from 28 countries in Europe and North America are taking part in the exercise, which will last about a month. It has been dubbed the Cold Answer, and takes place just a few hundred kilometers from the Russian border as Vladimir Putin’s forces continue to wage war in Ukraine. About 35,000 troops, 200 aircraft and 50 are involved in the giant war games. The purpose of the exercise is to show how a unified multilateral force would protect Norway and the northern wing of Europe from attacks.
“NATO as an alliance must be ready for everything, ready for all situations. It is essential for us to support our Norwegian partners and that is why we are training so often in the Arctic. “The Cold Response is a great opportunity for allies and key alliance partners to come together in the most challenging environment in the north, to be ready for any eventuality and to learn to work together,” said Rich. Cantrill.
He confessed that soldiers from Great Britain, Norway, USA, Holland, France, Germany and Italy, will be committed to defending Norwegian land from a simulated massive offensive. A group of amphibious ships, led by HMS Albion, will also enter the game, while the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales HMS Richmond, or the HMS Defender type 45 destroyer will also take part.
