Brucellosis has reappeared this year on a cattle farm in the municipality of Memaliaj.
The zonal disease that has traditionally been present in the Gjirokastra region marked the first outbreak for this year with 5 infected heads out of about 40 that have herds. Blood samples were also confirmed as positive by ISUV while the farm has been quarantined. The head of the veterinary service however announced that the situation does not pose a danger to the population as the case is isolated and under control. Infected cattle were not bred for milk but only for meat.
Brucellosis or melitiasis is known to be transmitted to humans and infected people become chronically ill. The services guarantee that there are no new cases of infections of citizens but there are cases of chronically ill.
Last year, 4 brucellosis-infected areas were registered throughout the county, but the cases are mainly related to small farms with a limited number of heads. The 28 cattle farms that supply milk to the workshops and consumers are clean. Gjirokastra region, the largest livestock region in the country has registered about 260 thousand small heads and 12 thousand cattle, in addition to the annual periodic supplement.
