New attempts to evacuate civilians from besieged cities in Ukraine are being complicated by ongoing Russian bombing, according to Ukrainian officials.
Humanitarian corridors continue to Mariupol, Sumy and towns and villages outside the capital Kiev.
The situation in Mariupol is particularly depressing after two weeks of bombing.
Regional officials also said fighting in the area was ongoing and that there was a continuing threat of airstrikes.
Mariupol Deputy Mayor Serhiy Orlov told the BBC that a convoy had left Zaporizhzhya for the city transporting aid, and it was unclear if it would pass.
“This is the seventh attempt. In the previous six it did not work. “The columns were not allowed to pass, they were bombed, the road was mined, there was shelling in the city,” he said.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said she hoped the day would go well and that “Russia will fulfill its obligations to guarantee a ceasefire,” according to the BBC.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said about 1,300 people of his country had died since the beginning of the Russian occupation.
Today marks the 17th day of the Russia-Ukraine war.
