Animal feed prices could rise from 8% to 20% as a result of the conflict in Ukraine, says the UN food agency.
In a preliminary assessment of the Russian occupation of Ukraine, the Food and Agriculture Organization says it is unclear whether Ukraine will be able to reap its output in the midst of the conflict.
According to the agency, 20-30% of ordinary cereals such as corn and sunflower seeds in Ukraine will not be planted or will remain unharvested.
Russia is the world’s largest exporter of grain, while Ukraine is the fifth largest country.
The two countries together provide 19% of the world ‘s supply of barley, 14% of wheat and 4% of corn, accounting for more than a third of global cereal exports.
The agency also expects the conflict to cause an increase in the number of malnourished people worldwide, at least from 8 to 12 million people in 2022-2023.
