Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday said that the European Union finds it impossible to completely cut off oil and gas supplies from Russia.
“We need to discuss the weaknesses we have in relation to our dependence on Russian oil and gas. I would suggest not to completely cut off oil and gas supplies from Russia“, Rutte stated this Wednesday during a joint press conference with his French counterpart in Paris.
He emphasized that the decision was not a signal of a formal antitrust inquiry into Russia, but said that it was “very painful” for Russia.
On Tuesday, the EU announced that it was considering limiting Russian gas imports by two-thirds this year and completely avoiding Russian oil and gas supplies by 2030.
Rutte added that the bloc’s sanctions against Russia are aimed at the Russian leadership and not at the citizens of the country.
