A senior US defense official has said that the city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine has already been isolated by Russian forces.
The residents of Mariupol have been without water and electricity for several days.
According to the official, Russian forces have not yet entered Mykolaiv, a key city that could be used as part of a coordinated attack against the city of Odessa, although there has been an increase in bombing and shelling of Mykolaiv.
Russian forces are still trying to advance into the cities of Kharkiv and Chernihiv, but are facing Ukrainian resistance.
