Members of Médecins Sans Frontières reported “severe living conditions” on Saturday in Mariupol, Ukraine.
In a statement to the media on Saturday, a member of the organization’s staff indicated that the situation there is dire, as the bombing was very heavy and close to residential areas.
“Yesterday we collected snow to provide some water. We tried to provide free water today, but the queue was long. We also wanted to get “social” bread but it is not very clear the schedule and places where it is distributed. According to people, many grocery stores were destroyed by rockets and the remaining things were quickly taken away by people. Electricity has not yet arrived, drinking water, having neither heating nor internet connection. No one has heard of any evacuation. Pharmacies are empty“, He said.
According to the organization people are trapped in Mariupol, where the war arrived so suddenly that many people find it impossible to leave.
Médecins Sans Frontières’s operations director Christine Jamet on Saturday called for a security corridor to allow civilians to leave Mariupol, including the organization’s staff and their families.
“Civilians should not be trapped in a war zone,” Jamet said, adding that “people who want to leave the war should have the security to make such a decision, without fear of war.”
