The Pentagon says the Russian occupiers are already 25 km from the center of Kiev and 10 km from the cities of Kherson and Chernihiv.
From Brussels, where he has been meeting with EU and NATO leaders since the emergency summit, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a grim analysis of the war.
“Stability in Europe is dependent on balance and the international rule-based order is being put to the test. There is an increasing number of civilian deaths”.
Blinken said the worst is yet to come, while reiterating the West’s stance that no no-fly zone will be established over Ukraine, as this is likely to lead to full-scale war.
Meanwhile a senior US defense official said Russia has so far fired more than 500 missiles and 92% of its combat power is now inside Ukraine
In the south, on the other hand, fierce fighting is taking place in the town of Kherson, which is said to have fallen under Russian control.
There is also fighting inside Mykolaiv, north-east of Odessa, while for the port city of Mariupol the US says that Moscow intends to surround it from the north and from the coast.
