Belarus will double the number of its troops on the southern border with Ukraine, said the country’s leader, Alexander Lukashenko.
Tactical battalion groups at the border will increase from five to ten over the next two days, he said.
According to him, these are mobile groups, well trained and ready “to stop any provocation and any military action against Belarus.”
Speaking before his Security Council, Mr Lukashenko described the mobilization as a “precautionary measure”.
Western countries have imposed sanctions on Belarus over Russia’s support for Ukraine.
Belarus has reportedly backed Russian troops with its own forces.
Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on February 24 after failing to provide assurances that NATO would not expand its military alliance eastward.
The West has strongly condemned the move, calling it a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and has imposed a series of sanctions against Russian entities and individuals.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he has authorized a “special military operation” in Ukraine to eliminate what he says is a serious threat from that country.
