Firefighters today cleared the burnt rubble outside a shopping mall in the Syrian capital Damascus, where a tragic fire killed 11 people this morning.
The interior ministry said it’s Tuesday morning fire was one of the most tragic in recent years.
Many of those killed were security guards and night shift staff working at the six-story center, said civil defense chief Ahmad Abbas.
Two people were injured in the tragedy.
The ministry statement said the fire had caused extensive damage to shops selling clothes, cosmetics or leather goods, all incendiary.
The exact causes have not yet been discovered, but fires in the Syrian capital are relatively frequent, caused by electric sparks or unsafe heating devices.
The Damascus police chief said the cause of the incident was most likely “internal”.
“The fire spread so fast that people in the building could not escape,” he told the media.
