The first round of talks between Ukraine and Russia to end the fighting ended after a concrete agreement.
An aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin said the talks lasted about 5 hours.
Vladimir Medinsky, the head of the Russian delegation to the talks in Belarus, said that the two sides “found some points on which joint positions can be envisaged in the future.”
The parties agreed on a new round of talks, Mr Medinsky said.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski, gave some details, adding that the talks focused on a possible ceasefire and that a second round could take place in the near future.
“The next meeting will take place in the coming days on the border between Poland and Belarus, we have agreed on that,” said the Russian representative in the talks Medinsky.
Ukraine seeks membership in the European Union
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had submitted a formal request for his country to join the European Union.
The request is made on the 5th day of the Russian attack on the smallest neighbor, which has sparked an immediate wave of condemnation from the international community. The 27-member EU bloc, as well as other countries, has pledged to send military aid to Ukraine.
The application for membership is symbolic anyway, as the process will take years. Ukraine has been weakened by years of pervasive corruption, which will make it difficult to meet the conditions.
“Our goal is to be together with all Europeans and, most importantly, to be on an equal footing,” he said. “I’m sure it’s right. I’m sure it is possible. “
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said he had had a phone call with the Ukrainian leader and “praised him for the courage of the people and the armed forces of Ukraine.”
“NATO allies are increasing support with air defense missiles, anti-tank weapons, as well as humanitarian and financial assistance,” Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter.
The British Ministry of Defense said on Monday that Russian troops continued to be more than 30 kilometers north of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, adding that “logistical failures and strong Ukrainian resistance continue to hinder Russian progress.”
This assessment is in line with the assessment of a senior US defense official, who told reporters on Sunday that “we have no indication that the Russian army has taken control of any city.” / VOA
