As Ukraine enters the 4th day of fierce fighting with the Russian occupier, Foreign Minister Dimtrio Kueba has called on all foreign nationals to help Ukraine fight.
“Foreigners wishing to defend Ukraine and the world order as part of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, I invite you to contact the foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine in your respective countries. “Together we defeated Hitler and we will defeat Putin as well,” he wrote on twitter.
On the other hand, although they can not send troops, there are some countries that have helped Ukraine with weapons. Germany on Saturday changed its historic policy, that of never sending weapons to conflict areas, saying that the Russian occupation of Ukraine was an epochal moment that endangered the entire post-World War II order throughout Europe.
The decision was an immediate change of course, with Berlin finally bowing to this pressure and the reality that Russia is besieging Ukrainian cities and threatening to overthrow the government in Kiev.
The German government will send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger anti-aircraft defense systems to Ukraine. The government has also authorized the Netherlands to send 400 rocket launchers to Ukraine and has told Estonia to send nine grenades.
Changing Germany’s stance could mean a rapid increase in European military aid to Ukraine, as much of the continent’s weapons and ammunition are at least partially produced by Germany, giving Berlin legal control over their transfer.
Poland, meanwhile, has begun sending ammunition by land, while Estonia and Latvia on Friday said they had begun sending fuel for trucks, weapons against Javelin armor and medical supplies at the border with Ukraine to be handed over to Ukrainian forces. The Czech Republic also said it would send weapons and ammunition, and Slovakia said it would send ammunition, oil and kerosene.
The Netherlands also said it would send 200 Stinger anti-aircraft defense systems to Ukraine – and Belgium announced it would supply Ukraine with 2,000 machine guns and 3,800 tonnes of fuel.
Across the Atlantic, the United States on Saturday also stepped up continued military assistance to Ukraine, authorizing up to $ 350 million to help strengthen Ukraine’s defenses.
