The fighting reached the streets of the Ukrainian capital on Saturday after the country’s army tried to stop the advance of Russian forces in various places.
We are in the third day of the war and the latest news is:
-A residential building was hit by a rocket in the early hours of Saturday morning while people were asleep. Images and videos have circulated on social networks showing extensive damage to apartments several dozen floors up, with completely detached walls. The causes of the attack and whether there are injured people or victims are still unknown.
On Saturday morning, Ukraine’s Interior Minister issued a warning on Facebook, saying: “Active warfare will be on the streets of our city.” He urges citizens to remain calm, stay indoors, cover themselves well and move into the nearest shelter as soon as they hear the air strike sirens.
-Explosions throughout the capital were heard from 02-04 in the morning. It is the first time that explosions have been reported inside Kiev, after several days of fierce fighting on the outskirts. The Ukrainian military attributed some of the blasts early in the morning to the destruction of a Russian tank.
Ukrainians have been preparing to defend their capital in recent days after officials handed them weapons while instructions on how to prepare Molotov cocktails were published. Some members of parliament even told CNN that they took up arms and learned how to shoot.
-Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to defend his country in a video filmed Friday night as he stood on the streets of Kiev with leaders of his administration. “We are all here to defend our independence,” he said.
-The mayor of the city of Vasilkiv, 35 km south of Kiev said on Saturday morning that fierce fighting had brought losses on the part of Ukraine.
-Many of the citizens left Kiev on Friday leaving the city streets quiet. More than 50,000 Ukrainians have fled the country in the last 48 hours, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Most have gone to Poland and Moldova.
