The European song festival ‘Eurovision’ announced today that after consultations of the board, it took the decision to expel Russia from the member states.
The event said in a statement that Russia is excluded reflecting the cultural echo of President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
“The decision reflects concern that in the face of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s involvement in this year’s competition would tarnish the competition’s reputation,” the board wrote.
This year’s competition is expected to take place on May 10-14 in Turin, Italy, after Italy won last year’s edition with the song “Zitti e buoni”.
“The European Festival is an organization with apolitical membership, committed to upholding the values of public service. “However, we remain committed to upholding the values of a competition that promotes cultural exchange, celebrates diversity through music and unites Europe on one stage.”
Russia already faces severe financial sanctions for military attack on Ukraine and the consequences have spread to the arts and sports field.
Earlier, the governing body of European football decided that the final of the Chanpions League competition scheduled for May 28 be held in Paris, instead of the initial programming for the Russian city of St. Petersburg.
