“Greece condemns the current Russian attack on Ukraine, which is a clear violation of international law and world values. “It also undermines European peace and security,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a press release at noon on Thursday.
The protection of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of all states is a fundamental principle for Greece and condemns any violation of these basic principles set out in the Charter of the United Nations – the statement continues.
The Greek Foreign Ministry clarifies that by expressing solidarity with Ukraine it will continue to stand by the Greek community there in these difficult times, while calling on the Russian side to immediately end the acts of war, which, among other consequences, endanger the lives of civilians, including the Greek community living in Ukraine.
The statement concludes that Greece is in constant coordination with its European partners and NATO allies in responding to violations of international law.
It is noted that the Greek Foreign Minister has returned urgently from a trip to Africa, while Prime Minister Mitsotakis has convened for the second time in two days the Extraordinary Governmental Council for Defense.
There he stated in a dramatic tone that “Russia’s attack on Ukraine puts the world community dramatically ahead of its responsibilities. Because in the Ukrainian crisis the International Law, the validity of the Treaties, but also the very right of the states to live free are tested. “And they also pose a great threat to geopolitical stability in Europe and the international energy balance.”
“Greece respects the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of all countries. It therefore unequivocally condemns acts that conflict with these values. And much more condemns the brutal violence from which, unfortunately, many innocent people will lose their lives.
Therefore, as a member of the European Union and NATO, we are coordinating with our partners so that our response is not just common, but also in line with the unprecedented Russian provocation. “And, of course, we always keep an eye on our homogeneities there, especially in the Mariupol area,” Mitsotakis said.
Regarding the energy crisis he said that the Greek government is adapting its policies based on the new situations created and has assured the Greeks that gas and oil reserves are secured.
He will also propose at the summit of EU member states that European financial instruments will be created to cope with the rise in energy prices as long as this phenomenon lasts and join the view that all these developments highlight even more so the need for significant strategic European autonomy in the energy issue ”.
