“My mother called me and told me that the war had begun” / First reactions of Ukrainians

In the capital Kiev, people have fled to seek security amid fears that Russian forces will attack the city.

Two young men seeking safety with their family elsewhere in the country have spoken to the BBC.

“I will now go to the center of Ukraine, my parents live there, and it seems a safer area. I did not sleep until 4 in the morning because we had been warned that there would be war. “But then after I fell asleep, my mother called me and said that the war had started,” she said.
