European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned what she called Russia’s unprecedented military aggression against Ukraine.
The European Union is with Ukraine, she said.
“Russia must withdraw its military and fully respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.”
The EU chief has said that European bloc leaders will discuss the situation and adopt further measures against Russia.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Thursday that Russia had launched an invasion of his country.
In a Twitter post, Kuleba wrote that Russian President Vladimir Putin had launched a “full-scale invasion of Ukraine.”
“Ukraine’s peaceful cities are under attack. “This is a war of aggression,” Kuleba said.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, has said that Russia has carried out missile attacks on the infrastructure of Ukraine and on the border guards.
Through a Twitter post, he said he had talked to Western allies and called on them to help Ukraine with defense and finance.
The Russian president has confirmed that he has launched, as he said, a “special” operation for the “demilitarization” of Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden has condemned the operation, calling it an “unprovoked and unjustified” attack on Ukraine, adding that the world “will hold Russia accountable”, according to REL.
Ahead of the attack in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week that he recognizes the independence of the two separatist regions in Ukraine as independent states.
This decision has been condemned by the West.
